The Higher Education Centre of the Academic University was an independent legal entity up to 2009 and was called as the Academic Physics and Technology University of the Russian Academy of Sciences (APTU RAS). This university was created under the decree of Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (# 290, October 8, 2002) and was the first higher educational institution affiliated to the Russian Academy of Sciences. Under the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation (#343-р, March 14, 2006) it was given the status of federal state educational institution of higher professional training that offered graduate and postgraduate courses.
In 2008 the education centre obtained the state accreditation receiving the state status of a "Higher Educational Institution - University" (the state accreditation certificate #0723, November 22, 2010).
According to the decree of the Presidium of RAS (#121, May 28, 2009) the Academic Physics and Technology University of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been reorganized by uniting with the St. Petersburg Physical Technical Research and Education Centre RAS and the Lyceum “Physical-Technical School”. The united organization has received the name of St Petersburg Academic University — Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Higher Education Centre of the Academic University is, as a matter of fact, the successor of the Academic Physics and Technology University of the Russian Academy of Sciences and aims at training masters and post-graduate students.
On April 26, 2010 the Academic University was granted the status of National Re¬search University on the basis of the conducted analysis of its current state and dynamics of its development for the last 3 years in such characteristics as personnel potential, infrastructure of educational process and scientific research, efficiency of educational and innovative research activity, international and national recognition.
